L'œuvre en bref
With Leisure – Tribute to Louis David, Fernand Léger confronts French pictorial tradition with scenes from modern life. The title refers to Jacques-Louis David, a major figure in history painting, but Léger transposes this heritage into a contemporary context. He replaces ancient heroes with ordinary characters and introduces objects related to leisure and urban life. The work thus questions the place of the body and the collective in a society marked by industrialisation and new social practices.
The scene brings together several figures arranged frontally. Two bicycles structure the composition, their wheels forming dominant circles. The characters wear brightly coloured clothes: red, yellow, green, blue. A woman is seated in the foreground, while a man in a yellow suit holds a child. On the left, a stylised tree rises behind a bicycle. At the top right, white doves stand out against a deep blue background. The black outlines clearly mark each shape, and the volumes are simplified, almost sculptural.
