Apple tree in blossom - Piet Mondrian
Piet Mondrian painted a series of three pictures of trees. Red Tree was the first, in 1909, followed by Silver Tree in 1911. Apple Blossom is the last painting in the series, which Mondrian produced in 1912.
The shades were now pearly: fine touches of mauve, gold and emerald green spread out delicately. There is no longer any horizon, only shapes floating weightlessly in space. There are no trunks, branches or even the flowers suggested by the title of the work. This series of trees testifies to Mondrian's artistic evolution and his transition to abstraction, exploring in a poetic and subtle way the shapes and colours inspired by nature.
