L'œuvre en bref
This portrait was painted during the period in the 20th century when Nicolas de Staël was still interested in the human figure, before gradually moving away from it. At this stage in his career, he approached portraiture without seeking detailed psychological resemblance, but while maintaining a clear interpretation of the subject. The model, Jeannine, is treated with sobriety, in an approach that emphasises the general structure of the body and the relationship between the figure and the surrounding space.
The canvas depicts a seated woman, seen from the waist up, her head tilted slightly downwards. She is wearing dark blue and black clothing and a light yellow scarf covering her hair. Her right arm is folded against her body, her hand resting on her opposite forearm. The background is neutral, in shades of grey and brown, with no decorative elements. The paint is applied in thin layers, with soft contours and subtle transitions between areas of colour.
