Designed as a striking image for public spaces, Poster for L'Inhumaine reveals Fernand Léger's interest in the dialogue between painting, graphic design and cinematic modernity. Created for Marcel L'Herbier's film, this composition transposes the visual explorations of Cubism and mechanical aesthetics onto the poster.

The whole is structured by a network of intersecting black and grey shapes. Massive, vertical letters are integrated directly into the composition: the text does not float above the image, but becomes an architectural element. Arcs, circles and angular segments organise the space like the parts of an abstract machine. The contrasts are strong, dominated by a reduced range of blacks, whites and greys, which reinforces the visual impact.

Here, Léger does not seek to illustrate a scene from the film. He constructs an autonomous image, punctuated by dynamic lines and simplified volumes. This synthesis of art, typography and technical modernity reflects his ambition to bring industrial and urban aesthetics into the field of visual arts, blurring the boundaries between painting and graphic design.
