Sailboats in Antibes - Nicolas de Staël

L'œuvre en bref

In Antibes, Nicolas de Staël found an environment conducive to an increasingly refined style of painting, focused on the sea and the horizon. In these late works, he moved away from any urban description to concentrate his attention on the essential lines of the maritime landscape. The sailboats are no longer treated as identifiable objects, but as vertical landmarks that help to organise the pictorial surface and the relationships between sky, water and light.

The canvas is dominated by a vast expanse of blue, covering almost the entire composition. In the lower part, white and slightly cream-coloured touches form an irregular horizontal area, suggesting the surface of the water. Thin, light vertical lines emerge from this area, evoking the masts of moored sailing ships. The paint is applied in smooth layers, with a few visible brush marks. The whole is based on a simple structure, built on contrasts between deep blue and light areas.
