Self Portrait with Small Monkey - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
In this self-portrait, Frida Kahlo depicts herself surrounded by two faithful companions: a monkey and a dog, often symbols of tenderness and protection in her work. Produced during the 1940s, this painting bears witness to the artist's solitude, but also to her desire to assert her identity through the constant representation of her pets and personal attributes.
Frida Kahlo is depicted in bust form, wearing a brown huipil with light stripes. Her face, serious and frontal, is framed by a golden ribbon that snakes between her, the monkey on the left, the dog xoloitzcuintli on the right, and a pre-Columbian sculpture in the background. The monkey's gaze is turned towards the viewer, while the dog looks to the right. In the background, the pale sky highlights the figures in the foreground, creating a scene that is both intimate and symbolic.
