L'œuvre en bref
In The Discs, Fernand Léger builds the composition around circular shapes, cylinders and mechanical elements that interlock with one another. The coloured circles dominate the canvas and create a very strong visual rhythm, whilst the vertical lines and geometric structures evoke an industrial or urban setting. The bold colours are arranged in clean blocks, reinforcing the sense of order and structure.
This work dates from the period when Léger was developing his style, inspired by machinery and modernity. Fascinated by industry, architecture and mechanical objects, he sought to represent the modern world using simple, solid and legible forms. Objects are no longer depicted realistically, but transformed into geometric forms, giving his paintings an appearance that is at once mechanical, dynamic and very modern.
