Living on the Mediterranean coast, Nicolas de Staël devoted a significant part of his work to landscapes of the South. Antibes became a central location for him, where he observed coastal architecture and variations in light. In these views, he deliberately simplified the motifs to focus on the organisation of planes and volumes, without seeking a precise topographical description. The lighthouse, a vertical and stable element, serves here as a structuring reference point in the composition.

The canvas depicts a lighthouse standing in the centre, painted in light grey, standing out against a pale sky with pink and beige tones. On the left, a small yellow house with a dark roof sits on a white expanse evoking the ground or the shore. On the right, a black horizontal mass suggests a building or a wall. The whole is constructed with large areas of flat colour, with clear but slightly irregular contours. The paint is matt, applied in visible layers, organising the space through simple contrasts between light and dark.
