L'œuvre en bref
Here, Nicolas de Staël approaches the theme of the musical instrument as a set of forms to be organised in space. At this point in his career, he was interested in cultural objects, instruments, furniture and interiors, which he treated without seeking detailed resemblance. The piano became a medium for exploring relationships between mass, colour and balance, independently of any musical scene or human presence.
The composition stands out against a uniform yellow background covering the entire surface. In the centre, a large horizontal black shape evokes the piano, supported by simplified vertical elements. A rounded red area appears below, suggesting the body of the instrument or an associated element. On the right, a chair is indicated by light blue vertical stripes. At the top, a small white square containing a red square punctuates the space. The shapes are painted in thick, flat colours with clear contours, without depth or marked perspective.
