The two Fridas - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
This painting was created by Frida Kahlo in the 20th century, at a time marked by her separation from Diego Rivera. It reflects a moment of great emotional distress. The work features a double self-portrait in which Frida explores her bicultural identity and her emotional wounds. The Frida in the white dress symbolises her European heritage and a rejected version of herself, while the Frida in the Mexican dress evokes her attachment to her indigenous roots and her lost love.
Visually, the painting shows two Fridas sitting side by side, holding hands. Their hearts are exposed and linked by a red vein. The vein is severed on the left side, where the Frida in the white dress is holding a surgical instrument, letting the blood run down her skirt. On the right, the Mexican Frida holds a small medallion. The background consists of a stormy sky, reinforcing the tense and dramatic atmosphere of the scene.
