Art has often been used as a substitute for writing to narrate historical events. Eugène Delacroix depicts a scene of revolution in his iconic painting Liberty Guiding the People. Jacques Louis David was a French artist who is considered one of the most important figures of the neoclassical style. His work is characterised by its clarity of form and its emphasis on classical themes and subjects. David began his career as a painter of historical scenes and portraits, but he is best known for his painting of the Death of Marat, which depicts a revolutionary martyr in a heroic light, and Bonaparte crossing the Great St Bernard. Michelangelo was an Italian Renaissance artist, best known for his sculptures, such as the statue of David and the Pieta. However, Michelangelo was also a talented painter, and his masterpiece is the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which depicts hundreds of characters from the Bible, the Creation of Adam. William Turner was an English romantic painter whose work was known for its expressive use of colour and light. Turner was particularly interested in the effects of weather, and many of his paintings depict storms at sea or other natural phenomena. Turner's work has had a lasting impact on subsequent generations of artists, and he is considered one of the most important British painters. Fort Vimieux is one of his most famous romantic paintings.
