Romanticism is an artistic movement that began in the late 18th century and reached its peak in the early 19th century. It was characterised by an emphasis on emotion and individualism, and a rejection of the constraints of rationalism. Romantic artists sought to capture the power of nature and the emotions of humanity. They often drew inspiration from mythology and folk tales, and their works often feature wild landscapes, storms and other natural phenomena. One of the most famous Romantic painters was Caspar David Friedrich, who created atmospheric paintings of forests and mountains. Another leading Romantic artist was William Turner, whose works often captured the energetic power of the natural world. The Romantic movement had a profound impact on literature, music and art, and its legacy is still visible in many works of modern art.
Turner was known for his landscapes, which often depicted scenes of nature in turbulent conditions as in Fort Vimieux. Friedrich, on the other hand, was known for his solitary figures in stark landscapes with The Traveller Contemplating the Sea of Clouds and The Sea of Ice. Although their paintings could not be more different in terms of subject matter, both artists used their canvases to explore the relationship between man and nature. Turner's paintings often convey a sense of awe and wonder, while Friedrich's are more reflective and introspective. Together, their works helped shape the course of nineteenth-century painting.
