Viva la Vida - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
This still life, painted by Frida Kahlo shortly before her death, depicts a brightly coloured arrangement of ripe watermelons. The painting features several fruits, either whole or cut up, with green rinds and red flesh punctuated by black seeds. In the center, a quarter bears the handwritten inscription ‘Viva la Vida - Frida Kahlo - Coyoacán, Mexico’, affirming a celebration of life despite the suffering the artist was going through at the time.
The composition unfolds in a succession of carefully juxtaposed round volumes against a background of blue sky dotted with white clouds. The contrast between the dazzling freshness of the fruit and the message inscribed on it gives the work a joyous yet poignant quality. With its direct style and saturated palette, the painting evokes popular Mexican traditions and testifies to the artist's resilience in the face of illness.
