Circus horses - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
This work is in keeping with Raoul Dufy's taste for show scenes, and in particular the world of the circus. The picture evokes an equestrian representation, not in a realistic setting, but as a sequence of stylized, almost choreographed figures. The composition seems like a sketch from his imagination.
The painting shows several horses in motion, spread over the entire surface, with a costumed trainer in the center. The animals are painted in light hues - whites, purples, blues - and the red harnesses stand out against the cool tones of the background. Black or colored outlines emphasize the contours without ever freezing the forms. The background is composed of large flat tones of blue, modulated by transparency effects. The space is deliberately flattened, without perspective, and constructed like an abstract scene where gestures and lines take precedence over narrative. The whole conveys a sense of visual rhythm akin to a parade.
