Horses in the woods - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
This work is one of many equestrian scenes painted by Raoul Dufy, who was particularly fond of depicting horses at liberty or at rest. The composition shows a group of horses gathered in a clearing, under a canopy of dense, colourful foliage. The bodies are sketched with light lines, sometimes simply suggested.
The warm tones of the dresses - brown, russet and beige - contrast with the greens, blues and purples of the décor. The vegetation is painted in washes, with rapid, repeated strokes evoking the leaves and the play of light. The overall effect is one of calm and naturalness, with great transparency in the pictorial material and a construction based more on the rhythm of the forms than on the realism of the volumes.
