L'œuvre en bref
In Forms in Space, Fernand Léger abandons almost all direct reference to reality to focus on simple volumes suspended in a neutral space. Circular shapes, black lines and coloured surfaces seem to float freely, linked together like the components of a mechanism or an imaginary structure. The composition is very balanced, with each form occupying a precise position, creating a sense of order and stability despite the absence of traditional perspective.
This work demonstrates Léger’s interest in abstraction and in the relationship between forms, colours and space. He no longer seeks to represent an object or a scene, but to organise the canvas as a visual construction made up of rhythms, volumes and contrasts. This style of painting reflects his desire to create a modern visual language, inspired by architecture, mechanics and design, where painting becomes an organisation of forms in space rather than a representation of the visible world.
