L'œuvre en bref
In The Two Women with Bouquets, Fernand Léger composes an interior scene in which the proximity of the figures creates an impression of calm and solidity. The two women, placed in the centre, stand closely embraced. One carries a brightly coloured bouquet, whose small round flowers introduce a delicate note into a highly structured ensemble.
The bodies are treated as solid, almost cylindrical volumes. The faces, smooth and simplified, have features reduced to the essentials, without any marked expression. The arms form regular arcs that give rhythm to the composition. Around them, the space is organised by a tangle of straight lines, rectangles and circles: furniture, decorative objects and architectural elements interlock in a rigorous grid. The striped floor, in marked perspective, accentuates the stability of the scene.
This work belongs to Léger's ‘classical’ period, where the influence of Cubism is evident in the geometric construction, while leaving room for monumental and legible figures. The colours are bold – yellow, red, green, black – applied in clean, flat areas. The whole gives an impression of controlled balance, where the intimacy of the gesture is part of a precise visual architecture.
