L'œuvre en bref
Painted between 1880 and 1881, Luncheon of the Boating Party is one of Auguste Renoir's most emblematic works and a manifesto of nineteenth-century convivial painting. The scene takes place on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise, the famous restaurant located on the island of Chatou, a beloved retreat for rowers and the Parisian bohemia. Renoir gathers his close circle here: Aline Charigot, his future wife, plays with a small dog on the left; the patron Charles Ephrussi appears in a top hat in the background; the painter Gustave Caillebotte, seated on the right in a sleeveless shirt, completes this gallery of friends. This canvas marks the climax of the painter's Impressionist period, just before his famous trip to Italy that would transform his pictorial approach.
The composition teems with fourteen figures arranged across multiple planes, around a table laden with bottles, crystal glasses, fruit, and the remnants of the meal. The red and white striped awning stretched above the scene structures the upper part of the canvas and filters the summer light, while in the background the Seine can be glimpsed with its sailboats. Renoir orchestrates a symphony of glances, gestures, and conversations: some guests chat, others flirt, drink, or daydream, in an atmosphere of shared happiness. The dazzling white tablecloth in the foreground catches a multitude of coloured reflections, a virtuoso technical feat that testifies to the painter's mastery. The palette, rich and warm, blends luminous whites, deep blues, soft pinks, and golden touches, celebrating that sweetness of life Renoir considered the very essence of his painting.
