My Birth - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
Frida Kahlo painted this work in 1932, when she had just suffered a miscarriage in Detroit. This period marked a turning point in her personal and artistic life. She was confronted with loss, bereavement and profound reflections on motherhood, filiation and identity. The painting, bold and provocative, is one of the most personal of her career. It blends the intimate and the sacred, transgressing the artistic and religious norms of its time.
The scene shows a woman lying in bed, her legs spread, giving birth to Frida. The mother's body is covered by a white sheet, leaving only her legs and lower abdomen visible, and the child emerging from the vagina, its head bloodied. The baby's face, already adult, is that of Frida. On the wall, a painting of the Virgin of Sorrows reinforces the religious and tragic dimension of the scene. The space is bare, the bed massive, and the heavy atmosphere underlines the physical and psychological violence of the experience depicted.
