Open window in Nice - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
Painted in the 1920s, this painting is one of a series in which Raoul Dufy explored interiors overlooking the Mediterranean, particularly from Nice, where he regularly stayed. This period marked a decorative and luminous turning point in his work, influenced by the light of the South of France. Here he was inspired by the idea of the window as a link between intimate comfort and the landscape outside, a theme he shared with other modern painters such as Matisse.
In this work, the painting is built around a colourful interior opening onto the sea and the city. The scene is structured around large open shutters that frame a view of a sunny coastline. The palette is dominated by deep blues, bright yellows and touches of red. The paint is briskly applied, with black outlines that give structure to the forms. The main subject is the coexistence of interior and exterior.
