The beach and the pier at Trouville - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
This painting, produced in 1905, belongs to a period when Raoul Dufy was still very much influenced by the Impressionists and the work of Eugène Boudin. He chose to depict a seaside scene on the Normandy coast, a very popular theme in French painting at the time, linked to bourgeois leisure activities and booming seaside resorts.
The composition shows a crowd of strollers gathered on a beach and a wooden jetty, facing the sea. The palette is dominated by pastel tones: light blue for the sky and water, pinks and light greens for the parasols, clothes and striped parasols. Light is treated with great care, diffused evenly. The shapes remain legible but not very detailed, with a quick, vibrant touch. The whole picture depicts a moment of calm and observation against the sea horizon.
