Racehorses at Longchamp - Edgar Degas
It was at the end of the 19th century that horse racing became a popular sport in France. Edgar Degas, who was passionate about horse racing, produced an important series of paintings on the theme of horse racing, a series entitled "Scenes of Modern Life". On the track or in the fields, Degas showed the power and prestige of these races in his time. Here, the artist depicts riders preparing for a race in the middle of a vast landscape under the twilight sun. Degas gives free rein to his talent as a colorist and his influence from Paul Gauguin.
