Self-portrait with the portrait of Dr Farill - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
This painting was done in 1951, at a time when Frida Kahlo was seriously weakened physically. She had just undergone several spinal operations and had difficulty walking, which is why she is shown here in a wheelchair. The work pays tribute to Dr Juan Farill, the surgeon who operated on her several times and supported her during this difficult period. It is one of the last self-portraits she made, at a time when painting demanded an immense effort.
Seated in a wheelchair, Frida is wearing a loose white dress with a large green collar. Her gaze is fixed, frontal. On her lap rests a heart-shaped palette, with veins and blood vessels painted on it, and brushes held firmly in her right hand. In front of her, on an easel, is the austere portrait of Dr Farill in a suit and tie. The empty, neutral background accentuates the intensity of the scene, which focuses on the link between pain, artistic creation and gratitude towards her doctor.
