The Avenue, Sydenham - Camille Pissarro
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
A wide avenue runs through the composition, lined with tall trees with bare branches. On the left, red and beige brick houses appear behind a fence, while on the right stands a church with a light-coloured façade and a slender bell tower. People walk along the pavements, some dressed in dark coats and hats, others accompanied by children. A horse-drawn carriage moves along the centre, pulled by two horses.
In this painting, Camille Pissarro depicts a street scene in Sydenham, a suburb of London where he stayed in the 1870s. The light is clear and even, diffused by a blue sky dotted with a few clouds. The colours are bold, with marked contrasts between the red roofs, the green lawns and the blue sky. The style is precise and structured, close to realism, but the visible brushstrokes already hint at the Impressionist approach that Pissarro would later develop.
