L'œuvre en bref
In this painting, Fernand Léger tackles the theme of sport and leisure, which he treats through a construction inherited from Cubism but already oriented towards his personal style. The bicycle, a symbol of modernity and movement, allows him to articulate human figures and mechanical forms within the same structure. The artist does not seek to represent a specific race or landscape; he organises bodies and objects according to a balance of coloured masses and curved lines.
Four figures occupy the space frontally, closely intertwined with the wheels and frames of the bicycles. The bodies are simplified, with rounded volumes and smooth faces. Black outlines emphasise each shape. The colours are bold: blue, red, yellow, green, black. The white wheels form large circles that structure the composition. The coloured backgrounds, arranged in irregular flat areas, fill the entire surface without any marked depth. The result is a compact image in which figures and machines are closely linked.
