In The Green Leaf, Fernand Léger moves away from the human figure to focus attention on a set of stylised objects and shapes. The work reflects his personal language derived from Cubism, in which elements are cut out, simplified and reorganised according to a visual rather than descriptive logic. Nature is not represented realistically; but is integrated into a network of geometric shapes and contrasting volumes.

The composition is horizontal and dense. A large yellow shape occupies the upper part, while a green leaf with marked contours dominates the left side. Flat areas of black and blue structure the background. In the centre, white, angular shapes interlock, accompanied by small touches of red. On the right, a dark surface and a grid pattern complete the ensemble. The black outlines are thick and continuous. The colours are bold and applied in clean blocks, without illusionistic depth, creating a balance between organic and geometric shapes.
