The Regatta - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
Raoul Dufy was particularly interested in seaside leisure scenes, such as regattas and nautical events. Here he found an ideal subject for exploring movement, color and popular gatherings. This type of composition illustrates his taste for festive scenes, seen as a whole rather than in detail, and treated with great formal freedom.
In this painting, the artist depicts an overhanging view of a nautical competition. Spectators stand in the foreground, watching colorful sailboats and rowers in deep blue water. The palette is vivid, with dominant shades of blue, yellow and red. Shapes are simplified, figures stylized, and contours accentuated by black lines. The scene is not realistic, but decorative, structured around the contrast between agitation at sea and calm observation from the shore.
