The Road to Versailles, Louveciennes, Snow - Camille Pissarro
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
A snow-covered road crosses the painting diagonally, lined with pale-coloured houses and a few bare trees. Bundled-up figures walk through the snow, one in the foreground and others further along the road. On the right, a cart is partially visible, parked in front of a house. The sky is bluish-grey, crossed by slight pinkish hues, evoking a dry but bright cold.
Camille Pissarro depicts the road from Versailles to Louveciennes under the snow, probably painted during one of his winter stays in the region. The colours are restrained, playing on a palette of whites, greys and cool blues. The shapes are rendered with soft contours, and the pictorial material reveals the texture of the support. The artist is interested in the diffuse light and tranquillity of the scene, capturing a winter moment of everyday life in a peaceful suburb.
