L'œuvre en bref
In The Camper, Fernand Léger associates the human figure with a modern environment combining nature and industrial structures. True to his evolution from Cubism, he simplifies volumes and accentuates contours in order to integrate characters and architectural elements into the same visual organisation. The theme of the outdoors and leisure is treated without any specific anecdote; but rather as a collective scene in which each figure contributes to the overall balance. The work connects bodies, objects and landscape through a rigorous construction.
In the centre, a woman in red holds a stylised yellow bouquet. On the left, a man carries a bag and holds a long cylindrical object. At the bottom, two seated figures occupy the foreground, one holding a ball. In the background, a vertical metal structure contrasts with a tree with rounded shapes. The uniform orange background highlights the silhouettes. The shapes are outlined in black, and the colours are bold: red, blue, green and yellow are applied in clean, flat areas without complex modelling.
