The Watering Hole - Camille Pissarro
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
A dirt track winds between trees lining a small river. In the centre of the painting, a man leads a white horse towards a watering hole. A second figure walks slightly behind, on the left. The tree trunks are slanted and line the scene on both sides. In the background, meadows stretch out to red-roofed houses, visible in the distance behind a hedge.
In this work, Camille Pissarro uses shades of green, brown and gold to evoke a rural landscape in early autumn. The foliage is rendered with small juxtaposed strokes, revealing the effects of light through the trees. The water in the foreground reflects the shapes and colours of the landscape. The sky remains discreet, filtered by the vegetation. The scene captures a moment of ordinary life in the countryside, in a calm and familiar setting.
