Vision after the sermon - Paul Gauguin
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
Paul Gauguin's Vision after the sermon is a daring post-impressionist painting in which the sacred and the profane coexist in a striking way. The lower section shows women at prayer, immersed in a silent spirituality. Above, there is a vibrant vision of Jacob wrestling with an angel, an explosion of intense orange where the dreamlike and the divine mingle.
As a genre scene, this painting bears witness to Gauguin's synthesism, with its use of stylised forms and bold colours. Jacob's vision, depicted without regard for traditional perspective, seems to emanate directly from the imagination and faith of the women praying below. In this way, Gauguin created a hybrid composition, blending the real and the imaginary, revealing the power of spiritual feeling.
