Post-Impressionism is a term used to describe the reaction of some artists to the work of the Impressionists. These artists, working in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, sought to express their own reactions to the world around them, often using brighter colours and bolder brushstrokes than the Impressionists. Although there is no distinguishing feature of Post-Impressionist paintings, many are characterised by an expressive use of colour and light, and an emphasis on surface texture. Important Post-Impressionist artists include Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh are three of the most famous painters of the Post-Impressionist period. Cézanne's work is characterised by the use of geometric shapes and muted colours, as in The Apple Basket, while Gauguin's paintings often feature bright, tropical hues. This can be seen in his works Two Tahitian women and Arearea. Van Gogh, on the other hand, is known for his expressive brushstrokes and vivid palette with his famous work The Starry Night. All three artists were united by their desire to break away from the traditional conventions of painting, and their works helped pave the way for the development of modern art. While each artist had a unique style, they all shared a passion for experimentation and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of art.
