Woman and Goat at Éragny - Camille Pissarro
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
A woman wearing a long skirt and white headscarf walks through a field, holding a rope tied to a white goat. The scene takes place in the countryside near Éragny, a village in Normandy where Camille Pissarro lived at the end of the 19th century. In the background, thatched roofs with red chimneys, neatly trimmed hedges and massive trees can be seen. The landscape opens onto a rolling plain and a blue sky dotted with light clouds.
The composition is horizontal and structured in successive planes, from the green meadow to the bright sky. The vegetation is painted with small juxtaposed strokes, typical of Pissarro's Impressionist style. The colours are fresh: greens, blues, yellows and touches of purple intertwine to create light effects. The painting captures a peaceful, ordinary rural scene, with particular attention paid to the textures of the vegetation and the atmosphere of the moment.
