L'œuvre en bref
As part of the Dutch Baroque movement, Johannes Vermeer's Woman with Scales is a masterpiece of intimacy and subtlety. This genre scene reveals the richness of the present moment, capturing a woman absorbed in a daily task with remarkable attention.
The painting is bathed in soft natural light from a window on the left, illuminating a standing woman carefully holding a pair of scales. Her clothes, in soft shades of blue and yellow, stand out against the dark background of the room. To the right, a table covered in a sparkling blue cloth, with glittering jewels on it. In the background, a painting of the Last Judgement adds a spiritual dimension to the domestic scene. Vermeer's talent for the precise representation of light and space makes this everyday scene extraordinarily vivid and meaningful.
