In Discs in the City, Fernand Léger depicts an urban world constructed from geometric shapes, metal structures and large coloured circles that appear to float amidst an industrial landscape. The discs, vertical lines and architectural elements intertwine to create a dense composition, inspired by the modern city, machinery and architecture. The bold colours, including red, yellow, green, black and white, reinforce the mechanical and rhythmic quality of the whole.

This work belongs to a period when Léger was deeply interested in modernity, the city and technology. Fascinated by machines, construction sites and urban life, he developed a highly recognisable style, sometimes referred to as ‘tubism’, characterised by cylindrical forms, simplified volumes and clean contours. His work seeks to represent the modern world through a new pictorial language, inspired by industry, architecture and movement.
