L'œuvre en bref
In The Birds, Fernand Léger creates a highly dynamic image composed of curves, colourful shapes and birds in motion. The white silhouettes of the birds stand out sharply against the intense red background, whilst yellow and blue shapes intertwine around them, like ribbons or stylised plants. The overall effect conveys a sense of continuous movement, as if the scene were animated by the wind or the flight of the birds.
This work belongs to Léger’s late period, when his style became freer and more decorative. He was then deeply interested in nature, animals and organic forms, whilst retaining his thick black outlines and bold colours. His work increasingly sought to create simple, legible and highly colourful images, akin to frescoes or mural art, intended to be viewed in public spaces rather than in the small formats of traditional painting.
