L'œuvre en bref
In The Bather, Fernand Léger moves away from the industrial world to return to a classic subject: the nude female figure. However, he does not seek to return to academic naturalism. The body is treated with a formal simplification inherited from Cubism, but softened by full, continuous volumes. The figure is not integrated into a detailed landscape; it is placed in an open space where attention is focused on the relationship between the human form and sculptural elements.
On the left, a nude woman sits on the ground with her legs folded. One arm is raised above her head, the other wraps around her knee. The volumes are smooth, modelled in shades of pink and white. A large dark blue mass descends along her body, contrasting with the light green background. On the right, a brownish vertical form, reminiscent of a stylised rock, stands as a counterpoint. The contours are sharp, the surfaces homogeneous, and the whole rests on a balance between the figure and the mineral mass.
