The Grand Lunch - Fernand Léger

L'œuvre en bref

In The Grand Lunch, Fernand Léger depicts three women seated in an interior structured by straight lines and flat areas of colour. The bodies are rendered as full, rounded volumes, almost mechanical, with simplified, impassive faces. The small red table laden with objects, including a bowl, a bottle and utensils, introduces a still life into the heart of the scene, while the yellow, blue and black bands organise the background into superimposed planes.

Produced in the 1920s, the work is part of Léger's ‘classical’ period. After his Cubist experiments, the artist sought to reconcile formal modernity with the legibility of figures. He asserted an aesthetic in which the human body becomes monumental, stable, almost sculptural, integrated into a structured universe inspired by both modern architecture and everyday objects.
