L'œuvre en bref
In The Transport of Forces, Fernand Léger presents a monumental vision of industrial modernity. On the left, a steel structure rises like a mechanical cathedral, composed of beams, circles and openwork structures. On the right, a rainbow appears above a dark mass crossed by smoke, while a bridge connects the two poles of the composition. The clean flat areas, stark contrasts and opposition between rigid verticals and fluid curves structure the whole.
Painted between the two world wars, the work is part of Léger's reflection on technical power and energy. The artist does not depict a specific place, but rather an idea: that of the circulation of forces, whether electrical, industrial or symbolic. Machines, landscapes and natural phenomena coexist in the same visual construction, reflecting the optimism and tensions of an era fascinated by progress.
