The wash house at Bazincourt - Camille Pissarro
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
A small wooden building, sheltered under a sloping roof, can be seen in the centre of a wooded landscape. It is a wash house, located on the banks of a river. Slender trees surround it, their foliage forming a dense canopy. On the left, a woman accompanied by an animal leans towards the water. The water reflects the tree trunks and the soft light of the sky. The entire scene is enveloped in abundant, silent vegetation.
In this painting, Camille Pissarro depicts a peaceful corner of Bazincourt, a rural village where he stayed. The colours are subtle, consisting of greens, browns and pale greys. The brushstrokes are short and fragmented, typical of his Impressionist technique. The shapes remain slightly blurred, reflecting the density of the vegetation and the light filtered through the trees. Here, the artist has chosen a modest but precise subject, capturing the harmony between human activity and the natural landscape.
