Boulevard Montmartre, Mardi Gras - Camille Pissarro
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
A dense crowd fills Boulevard Montmartre on Shrove Tuesday. Spectators crowd the pavements, while a parade crosses the street in the centre of the composition. Horsemen, followed by colourful groups in costume, advance in formation. Buildings with light-coloured façades frame the scene on either side, and leafless trees offer glimpses of the buildings beyond.
Camille Pissarro captures the excitement of a carnival day in late 19th-century Paris. The colours are applied in thick, vibrant strokes, with a predominance of browns, reds and greens. The details are deliberately blurred to create an effect of movement and crowds. The pale, luminous sky contrasts with the colourful bustle of the street. The painting shows the artist's interest in urban life, popular gatherings and capturing the moment.
