Avenue de l'Opéra, Morning Sunlight - Camille Pissarro
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
A wide Parisian avenue stretches into the distance, with the Opéra Garnier visible at the end. Haussmann-style buildings line both sides of the street, with their dark roofs, red chimneys and light-coloured façades. Numerous passers-by, horse-drawn carriages, coaches and carts bring the scene to life. In the foreground, two circular fountains occupy the squares on either side of the avenue, surrounded by leafless trees.
In this work, Camille Pissarro depicts the Avenue de l'Opéra bathed in morning light. The sky is clear, dotted with a few light clouds. The façades are lit by the sun, and shadows are visible on the cobblestones. The colours are soft, with a predominance of cream, ochre and blue-grey tones. The brushstrokes are light and visible, reflecting the movement of the city and the daily hustle and bustle of modern Paris at the end of the 19th century.
