Weeping Coconuts - by Frida Kahlo
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
This painting by Frida Kahlo depicts a still life made up of tropical fruits carefully arranged on a uniform green background. In the center, two coconuts occupy the main space: one of them drips two white drops from its orifices, evoking human tears. This staging lends an emotional dimension to the composition, transforming the fruit into bearers of expression.
Around the coconuts are a slice of papaya sprinkled with black seeds, a red apple, a green pear and a cut lemon. A small banner, in the colours of the Mexican flag, is planted in the papaya and bears a handwritten inscription: ‘Pinto con todo cariño. Frida Kahlo‘ (’I paint with all my love. Frida Kahlo"). The whole combines elements of Mexican popular culture with intimate imagery, giving the painting a mixture of sweetness and melancholy.
