View of the Hermitage, Côte de Gratte-Coqs, Pontoise - Camille Pissarro
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
Houses with light-coloured walls and red-tiled roofs are scattered across a green hillside. A dirt track runs from bottom to top, lined with vegetation and young trees. Several human figures bring the landscape to life: two women and a child walk in the foreground, while other people can be seen further away, near the houses. The background is occupied by a wooded hill under a blue sky dotted with a few clouds.
In this view of Pontoise, Camille Pissarro chooses a frame structured around the village of Hermitage. The light is clear and even, highlighting the volumes and textures of the buildings and terrain. The colours are bold and balanced, with saturated greens, warm browns and touches of blue. The style here is closer to realism than impressionism, with particular attention paid to architectural details and the organisation of the rural space.
