L'œuvre en bref
In The Divers, Fernand Léger depicts several intertwined figures in a circular composition brimming with movement. The human forms are simplified into rounded, colourful silhouettes—a blend of red, white and black—against a deep blue background surrounded by a yellow border. The figures appear to be spinning, falling or floating, creating a sense of rotation and dynamism, like a scene observed underwater or in full motion.
This work belongs to the period when Léger took a keen interest in the body in motion, sport and modern leisure activities. After the Second World War, he sought to depict everyday life, popular activities and the human figure in a highly simplified, almost decorative style. The forms become freer, the colours brighter, and his compositions aim to be accessible to all, with the aim of bringing art closer to modern life and the public.
