Seascapes have long been a popular subject for artists because of the spectacular beauty of the ocean. Early seascapes often depicted ships at sea, sometimes in the middle of a storm. While these paintings were realistic, they also often conveyed a sense of awe and wonder at the power of the ocean. More recently, abstract expressionism has led to a more stylised approach to seascape painting. These works often feature large strokes of colour, intended to capture the energy and movement of the waves. Whether realistic or abstract, seascapes remain one of the most popular artistic genres.
The pointillist paintings of Paul Signac, and the impressionist paintings of Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne are often praised for their vivid colours and beautiful scenes. But a closer look reveals that these paintings are also a window into the artists' unique view of the world around them. Signac's seascapes are characterised by bold brushstrokes and sharp lines, which give an impression of energy and movement. This can be seen in Antibes, The Pink Cloud and Capo Di Noli. Monet's paintings, on the other hand, are often soft and blurred, giving the impression of a quiet day at the beach: Impression, Sunrise and The Walk at Trouville are examples. Cézanne's seascapes are perhaps the most striking of all, with their distorted forms and unusual perspectives, as in The Bay of l'Estaque. But despite their differences, all three artists have captured the essential beauty of the sea.
